America in One Room: Democratic Reform

Main content start

In June 2023, roughly 500 people in the U.S. will meet virtually to discuss current issues concerning democratic reform in the U.S. In this America in One Room project, a scientific sample of people selected to represent the entire country will participate in a Deliberative Poll using the Stanford Platform for Online Deliberation. Participants will deliberate on issues impacting democracy in the U.S., including the electoral system, the presidential election system, voter access and election administration, campaign finance, Supreme Court reform and civic education.  They will also pose questions to panels of policy experts in these areas to further inform their discussion.

HelenaNORC at the University of Chicago, and the Deliberative Democracy Lab at Stanford University are organizing this project with partial funding from Helena, Thiry-O’Leary Foundation, the Skoll Foundation, and Porticus.
