A National Deliberation on AI Policies
In October 2025, the Stanford Deliberative Democracy Lab organized a national Deliberative Poll to consult the public in shaping the future of regulating AI systems: A National Deliberation on AI Policies. Amid a lack of federal legislation on AI policy, the vast majority of states have introduced AI-related bills. This deliberation focuses on the proposals included within The Colorado Consumer AI Act, or CAIA. CAIA details the regulation of predictive, decision-making algorithms, rather than generative AI systems. 202 participants across the United States and 52 participants from Colorado participated in this deliberation. Results were compared against control groups composed of 273 U.S. participants and 67 Colorado participants. Topics discussed included AI’s role in the workplace, healthcare, and housing, as well as consumer rights and the legal responsibilities of deployers and developers of predictive AI systems.
